Career Progression Unique subcategories associated with career progression included career development, higher level training across careers stages, onboarding, organizational leadership development and succession planning. Agent and specialist mentoring is included in this category as well as in the professional development and supervisory skills categories. Coaching is included in both this category and in the supervisory skills category. Rankings in this category are unique to institutional type (Table 18). For the 1862 universities, the top ranked need is higher-level training across the career stages, followed by career development. Onboarding is third, followed by succession planning. In the 1890 and 1994 Land-grants, the top ranked need is training related to organizational leadership development. In the 1890 Land-grants this is followed by career development in second and onboarding in third. For 1994 Land-grants, onboarding and succession planning were both ranked second, while coaching ranked third.

1862 respondents provided further explanation for their choices of other. One respondent shared that “we are so focused on onboarding that no one sees the need to work with current employees so it becomes a revolving door” while another emphasized need to prevent burnout. Other respondents shared need for training in growth mindset and DEI-based training for leadership. Another respondent expressed need for clear direction for processes of administrative staff. Yet another shared that because they are “so small and not county -based that none of this really exists.” An explanation for other in the original overarching training needs placed in this category from an 1862 respondent was a need for “ training college and university level leadership to value and support staff with career growth opportunities and appropriate salary .”
