Human Resources Human resources incorporated the supervisory skills category while also encompassing employee recruitment and remote work environments. This category tied for third with community engagement in overall rankings of training needs for 1994 Land-grants. It ranked seventh for both 1862 and 1890 Land-grants. Although the percentage of selections increased from 1862 to 1994 Land-grants, employee recruitment was most highly ranked (Table 21). This was followed by supervisory skills as second. Remote work environments ranked third in all groups but appears more crucial for 1862 and 1890 Land-grants. One 1862 respondent explained a response to supervisory skills as follows “ Some ‘ supervisors ’ clearly had no supervisor training, and were also protected and immune from investigation by faculty status ”.
Table 21 Training needs ranked from greatest to least based on percent responses associated with Human Resources provided by Land- grant institution type.

Other responses to this question related to preventing employee burnout, career development, DEI for human resource professionals, work environment, and employee retention. Two statements connected with work environment reflect different needs. One response stated a need for employees to feel comfortable voicing concerns in the workplace. The second suggested need for different models of how we conduct work expressing a need to educate “ administrators to help them learn that the old 8 to 5 model doesn't work with modern employees .” While employee retention was stated nine times, the only explanation provided was need for strategies for emp loyee “retention strategies other than salary increases.”
