Professional Development Unique subcategories associated with professional development among the top ranked categories overall were campus and department issues, change management, distributed leadership, globalization impacts on local communities, identifying and using emerging technologies, leadership development, motivational interviewing, organizational knowledge, policy concerns and understanding Extension and the Land-grant system. Mentoring was repeated in this category from career progression and supervisory skills categories. Professional development was the highest ranked training need for 1994 Land-grants, fifth for 1890 Land-grants, and eighth for 1862 Land-grants. Understanding Extension and the Land-grant system was the top ranked training need for 1994 Land-grants, ranking second for 1890’s and fifth for 1862’s. For the 1994’s, leadership development, identifying and using emerging technologies, and policy concerns all ranked second. Change management and mentoring ranked third for 1994’s. For the 1890’s the top ra nked training need was leadership development. Ranking third for the 1890’s were mentoring, distributed leadership, and campus and departmental issues. R anking in order from first through fourth for the 1862 Land-grants were change management, leadership development, identifying and using emerging technologies, and mentoring.

This also appears to apply to institutional types. Respondents from 1862 Land-grants explained their responses to other as a need to understand “Extension history and its ramifications in the state” which is another way of contextualizing training that is provided.
