EXF 2023 Professional Development Needs Assessment Report

Gaps in Training Being Provided Figure 2 provides a comparison of training needs as compared to training provided. This allows us to see gaps where either there is potential need for more training to be provided or where perhaps more training is being provided than is really needed. There is great opportunity for individual institutions to do this type of comparison to consider where needs are being met and where resources may need to be shifted to better meet needs. Another consideration to better manage resources is to work with Extension at other institutions or external organizations already providing training to minimize duplication.

Differences across institutions means there may be parts of training that cannot be shared across organizations. However, there likely are also parts that can be shared. Identifying these and developing a course framework would be a good way to share training resources across institutions. This is an opportunity for Extension Foundation to facilitate the development of the frameworks. The information about where training is being provided is a good starting place to identify potential collaborators. The Extension Foundation or regions could possibly assist more limited-resource institutions in providing content. They may also be able to provide a mechanism for course delivery so that resources can be provided for institutions with lower numbers of Extension faculty. Curriculum could then be marketed nationally for Extension and other Land-grants faculty, strengthening training, and increasing institutional support. In addition, curriculum could be assessed, revised, and repackaged as needed to be used to support training with Extension stakeholders and volunteers.
