A National Survey of Professional Development Needs for Extension Employees
Semi-structured Interview Script
PROTOCOL
The interviewer will follow a standard protocol for each interview that includes:

Welcome and Opening Remarks
Hello, I am <interviewee>. I am conducting a national needs assessment of professional development needs for Extension on behalf of the Extension Foundation. Thank you for agreeing to participate in this interview related to the needs of your Extension organization. We hope to conduct approximately 25 interviews. Data from these will be used to develop a survey that will be distributed nationally. Findings from that survey will be used to develop Extension professional development programming through the Extension Foundation and possibly other JCEP organizations. We will also share the findings widely across the system. Our interview will be recorded with a digital audio recording to be sure we have captured the information you provide adequately. We will not link your identity to any of your comments. We will identify your organization and the region in which you are located to use in increasing understanding of Extension professional development needs in organizations of different types and in different locations. Your identity and the identity of your organization will be carefully protected in findings, presentations and publications that result from this study.
Next, we will go through the set of questions provided in this script.
Structured Interview Questions
I. What are the top three challenges being faced by your Extension organization? II. What training is being provided by your organization to help professionals better meet these challenges? Please indicate what group of employees is receiving the training and how the training is provided. III. What are the training needs of professionals in your organization in order to address these challenges? Please indicate what group of employees need to receive the training. Also, is this training something that could be provided at a regional or national level. IV. As I mentioned earlier, we would appreciate your help in promoting this survey with your Extension employees. Who is the best person in your organization to promote this survey? What is their contact information? Wrap-Up This concludes my questions. I want to sincerely thank you for your time and input. Do you have any questions or further statements you would like to make at this time?
