The Juntos Program

Through engaging in a 14-week curriculum that explored their immigrant stories and identities, the first group of Juntos NC students published their first book, The Roots of Our People: From One World to Another , in May 2018. Alongside our LCI team, the students took their words to libraries, coffee shops, bookstores, churches, and other institutions to share their knowledge about the immigrant stories. They engaged and led their communities by sharing their publications with multiple stakeholders in the community at public readings.

In fall 2018, the students embarked on their second publication, The Voices of Our People: Nuestra Verdades, which talks about youth advocacy and activism in their communities. In addition to this publication, they also published a peer-reviewed article in an academic journal in 2019, a major feat for high school students. The success of these Juntos authors has been remarkable but also a testament to the strong community and leadership within Juntos NC. We look back on our first book and are amazed at the work and writing that the students have accomplished. Youth can be leaders in their communities when they are given a platform to amplify their voices. We look forward to learning more from our student authors as we continue our partnership with Juntos NC in their summer academies and school partnerships.
