Report: Greater Chicagoland Compost Summit

FALL 2022 REPORT FEEDBACK Who responded? More than one fifth (23%) of all attendees completed the follow up survey, representing all but one industry (solid waste) who attended the Summit.

30% More than one fifth (23%) of attendees offered feedback on the compost summit report. While responses were received from all but one sector, together the Education and Non-Profit sectors accounted for half of all responses.*

Who else should have been at the Summit? The general sense was that various compost industries were well represented at the Summit. One respondent wrote, “ I thought it included most of the players ” but that perhaps the guest list should “ just continue to expand .” Specific suggestions included inviting the media, school administrators, more haulers, pro-environment lobbyists and legislators, landscapers, food waste producers such as universities, restaurant chains, and grocery owners, and more academic researchers, specifically science researchers. While commercial composters did attend, one respondent indicated that “ private companies that produce compost ” should have been there, perhaps because they did not meet anyone from the sector.

One respondent also indicated they thought more BIPOC growers should have been at the Summit and another thought that having more compost users such as “ urban farms that need constant inputs of good growing media ” would also have been beneficial. How well does the report reflect the conversations you had and the things you heard at the Summit?

Eighty-eight percent of respondents indicated the report accurately reflects the conversations they had during the Summit. Only two respondents indicated that they did not think the report was a good reflection of what they heard. One thought that a critical missing conversation was on “ cash and funding conversations (about) putting resources infrastructure in place. How much is it going to take? ” Another did not indicate specifically what conversations were missing from the report but asked that we refer to their earlier comments that said that “ The group seems to be focused on convincing households to compost and

requiring businesses to compost ” and that “ I'm stumped - was hoping to find some ideas at the Summit. Maybe this is just not an important issue for anyone but me and my farm. ” The ‘this’ refers to the issue they are currently working on of “ How can we reduce transportation costs (and fossil fuel use) in transporting raw food waste out of the city and then back in as finished compost. ” It seems that perhaps while this person was interested in talking about these things, others attending the Summit may have been less enthusiastic.
