Report: Greater Chicagoland Compost Summit

What are the next steps for this group to take to build a culture of composting? EDUCATION: • Education for the public and businesses on the importance of diverting food waste from the landfills POLICY: • I think it will take legislative action at the state level to overcome some of the economic headwinds that seem to be stalling or limiting the compost industry in IL. • get government involved CONTINUE TO MEET • help implement the steps or gather working groups to address them specifically • Quarterly discussion meet-ups • Convene the same group virtually- folks can share out answers to above. Keep momentum and inspire others. INCREASE AWARENESS • More exposure at schools, work, and businesses. • Compost should be a topic addressed by varied media outlets. Many people are unaware of the need for, and benefits of composting. GET ORGANIZED/COLLABORATE • Calendar and list of composting events and resources in the region. • May need to look at it in sub-regions to effectively engage people with like resources. • Identify the groups working on the main goals and set a long-term timeline for goal completion • It seems to me that collaborating with IL Food Scrap and Composting Coalition, which already has an established structure and working groups, might help operationalize the Action Topics. Or maybe there is more administrative capacity behind the group that organized this Summit that I don't know about. MISCELLANEOUS • Be more bold in our actions and initiatives. • Continued pilot action of community composting efforts to understand feasibility • The steps you outlined above
