Report: Greater Chicagoland Compost Summit

I would like to support homeowners, community gardens/farms to compost yard trimmings and food scraps in house or outside to be able to enjoy the process while being good stewards of our world. A composting system that is accessible to all, composting education from a young age, a culture of composting at home/work/cultural institutions as the norm, an accessible way for folks to get compost for their community gardens, home gardens, etc. Education: promote compost education in every school; Compost pickup service: have the curbside compost pickup service for every household; implement new technology Easy access and consumable information to the general public on how to start composting and why it's so important; Public composting bins at large events like sports or concert venues, or trade shows. My vision for the region relating to compost can be summed up by diverting compostable material from landfills. I would like to see those efforts focused on areas where currently communities are underserved with composting resources. I would like composting to be the norm in every household and place of business. Available to everyone (inputs and outputs), hyper local (minimize food scrap miles), maximum transparency (unlike current system), presence in every school to foster intergenerational buy-in minimize organics in landfills I want to see a place where anything organic-- food waste and other organic waste-- is respected as a resource. I want disposing of organic waste not by composting be considered a very anti-social behavior. I want composting collection containers next to recycling containers and small garbage containers all over public spaces. Infrastructure grows with large-scale and decentralized solutions in a way that benefits all inclduing community and well-paid workers and entrepreneurs from all communities; organics diversion grows through awareness, education, and policy; culture shifts to an understanding and interest in the value of working together for healthier soil, local food growing, and fun. Support and empower those doing work in communities, let them lead! Educate about PFASTS; Improve composting on large scale MWRD, large events, marathons, etc.; Change the culture; Educate, compost doesn't magically happen, it's hard work; Compost collectives and hired service subsidies for those who need help My vision is that composting becomes second nature in our region, as expected as bottle return. We'll have multiple pathways to compost: personal, municipal, and everything in between Opportunities to compost at work/school, home, play; All food packaging free of plastics; Cost to compost less than disposal; Locally produced compost readily available Get rid of fears in composting Some sort of curbside pick-up eventually; Bin distribution (discounted) and educational events That everyone is invested and have as their core value to reduce food waste, donate edible food and compost the rest and that the means to do so is available to everyone While I choose to compost, I realize the concept, interest, and financial outlay involved is not widely shared in the community. My hope is that we can help our neighbors and stakeholders begin to look at organics and food as a valuable resource we should not waste. Working in government, my ability to drive change in composting can be frustrated by the structures in place. I plan to continue to patiently push for progress.
