National Center for Home Food Preservation Fellow: Allisen, University of Georgia Roadmap

Fellow Report: Within the current reporting period progress has been achieved in two major areas: i) the National Center for Home Food Preservation (NCHFP) and ii) the Food Safety Consortium ● National Center for Home Food Preservation - a search for the website management fellow position was launched at the beginning of March and six students were interviewed. One candidate of choice was offered the position and accepted it. Currently, the University of Georgia is in the final stages of the hiring process. The NCHFP expects the Fellow to start working under Dr. Carla Schwan’s supervision before June 15, 2022. The Fellow will work on several tasks to update the NCHFP’s website, enhance its search function, and upload new content. Additionally, the NCHFP hired a program coordinator that helps Dr. Schwan to advance research in food safety and preservation, answer

questions from the general public and support content development. ● Food Safety Consortium - three subcommittees were established: ○ Home food preservation and consumer safety ○ Small business and cottage foods ○ Retail food safety

Currently each of the subcommittees is working on a white paper draft that outlines the goals and objectives the Consortium will work on. The white paper is not only envisioned to be shared with stakeholders but also to serve as a udie for us to move forward as a Consortium. The whitel paper will serve as an output and will demonstrate the progress made and the direction the Consortium will take. The Consortium is represented by 13 institutions from the Southern region. Team members of the Consortium have had meetings with researchers from UC Davis, Colorado State, Oregon State, University of Nebraska, Kansas State University and the University of Missouri and are exploring venues for collaboration and expansion in the near future. The Food Safety Consortium will host its first in-person meeting on June 20 - 22, 2022, in Athens, Georgia. The event has 29 attendees registered, representing eight institutions. The purpose of the event is to bring everyone together to identify and define important tasks/goals, such as publishing guidelines, the housing of documents, internal communication plans, social media presence, funding models, and memorandum of agreement, as well as allowing time for the subcommittees to meet as a small group, revise white paper and set goals for the next year.
