Data Science and Community Voice - ECOP Health ProgramAction Team Fellow: Roger Rennekamp, University of Kentucky Roadmap Health Data Science Fellow Report: This project is designed to increase the capacity of the Cooperative Extension System to better utilize the data science to identify health inequities and design precision interventions designed for a particular community or group. In consultation with Assistant Vice President, Lindsey Shirley at Colorado State University we are in the process of contracting for the professional services of Dr. Sue Schneider, CSU Extension Agent, and Dan Goldhammer, Denver County Director, to support increased utilization of data science by Cooperative Extension. The contract is currently being routed for review and eventual execution. Advances in data science have resulted in health outcome data being more granular than ever before (down to zip code or census tract) while data visualization techniques are making data easier to understand. Still, many communities lack the expertise to access and interpret data in ways that catalyze local action. They also lack skills in engaging residents of a community in giving meaning to data. Products of advanced data technologies, when augmented by the skilled engagement of resident voice, will produce more precise interventions for addressing health inequities than less focused approaches. Consequently, this project aims to build the capacity of county Extension staff and their community partners to utilize data science and community engagement techniques to assess existing conditions, establish priorities, design interventions, and evaluate progress toward addressing health inequities.
Catalyst’s Report: Scott Reed
● This occupies the least amount of catalyst time because of the established leadership and work of the ECOP Director of Health (Roger Rennekamp). Priorities are given by the Extension National Framework. Roger is attempting to finalize bringing a fellow on board from Colorado State and expects a presence at the National Health Outreach Conference. There is a relationship underway with Steve Gavazzi at Ohio State surrounding restorative justice. This project provides significant experiential support to the emerging Farm Bill priority addressing Community Learning through Data-Driven Discovery (CLD3) .
