National Center for Home Food Preservation Fellow: Carla Schwan, University of Georgia Roadmap

Fellow Report: Within the current reporting period progress has been achieved in two major areas; i) the National Center for Home Food Preservation's website, and ii) Food Safety Extension Network: Supporting Consumer, Retail, and Home-Based Businesses. National Center for Home Food Preservation - the University of Georgia hired a student fellow for the website management position, as well as contracted with Hop Studios to develop a CMS-based website. The student fellow is working closely with Dr. Schwan and Hop Studios on the creation of the new website, as well as content transfer. The CMS-based platform is estimated to be completed by December 2022. Dr. Schwan is actively working with the UGA team and Hop Studios to create a new website design to include accessibility features, such as offering support for disabled visitors accessing the NCHFP with a screen reader or using a non-traditional tool like a keyboard or stylus, and including a readable option for those with vision impairment or colorblindness. Food Safety Extension Network - Each subcommittee has a final draft for the white paper, which is envisioned to serve as an output and to demonstrate the progress made and the direction the Network will take. All three white papers will be merged to create one comprehensive document representing the entirety of the Network. The Network has presented its progress to the Eastern Region Home Food Preservation Team, the Western Region Food Preservation Working Group, and the North Central Region Group. The Network was also present at the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annual conference. Drs. Shumaker, Schwan, Chapman, and Penn shared updates on the Network with nationwide Extension Directors. The Network hosted a breakfast at the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) in August of 2022 to provide an update on our efforts and enable a connection between land-grant institutions that are not currently part of the Network. A total of 13 institutions were represented, eight being member institutions and five non-member institutions (University of California, Davis, University of Massachusetts, Iowa State University, Purdue University, and Ohio State University). In addition, the National Center for Home Food Preservation was represented at IAFP by an exhibit booth (picture attached) as an effort to market and educate other food safety professionals about the NCHFP and the Food Safety Network and build connections with other institutions in the area of food safety.
