Data Science and Community Voice - ECOP Health Program Action Team Fellow: Roger Rennekamp, University of Kentucky Roadmap Fellow Report: The Data Science and Community Voice project has been instrumental in advancing the recommendations of Cooperative Extension's National Framework for Health Equity and Well-Being. The central focus of the project is to help county-based Extension professionals better utilize sub-county data (disaggregated by zip code and or census tract) to identify health disparities and inequities. Data is available on both health outcomes and the social, economic, and environmental determinants of health. Resources identified through the project have been posted at https://health.extension.org Significant Results: ● The team at Colorado State University identified three different types of resources that can support county-based educators. These include a listing of major data science projects occurring across the country, a list of professional development offerings on data use, and a collection of data hubs. These resources have been shared through various venues including webinars, meetings, and posts to Connect Extension. Just recently, we received word that the Southern Region will be initiating an effort to help Extension educators use disaggregated data more effectively in program planning. A session on data science has also been included in Cooperative Extension's Appalachian Health Conference to be held November 3-4 in Roanoke. Experience(s) working with your Catalysts and Key Informants: The Extension Foundation provided the technical assistance to create the new national health website located at https://health.extension.org. The catalyst helped keep the project moving forward by scheduling regular check-ins and offering thoughtful commentary.
Does your project work with diverse, under-served or underrepresented audiences? Yes
Please explain briefly how your project works with these audiences. Equity is central to Cooperative Extension's work in health. This work seeks to raise the voices of those experiencing the greatest health burdens in hope of creating more equitable strategies for ensuring that lifelong health and well-being are within reach of all people.
