Measuring Extension Collective Impact: A Pilot Program to Create a Data Management Platform
Professional Development for Mid-Career
LONG-TERM GOAL To provide a model for developing an online platform that collects and evaluates data from Extension lifestyle change programs, in order to better demonstrate Extension’s impact on public health PROJECT CONTEXT Extension programs reach a large number of people, but there is limited data on the collective impact of the pro- grams nationally—potentially because states do not gen- erally use identical instruments for data collection and in multi-state collaborations, the emphasis is more on the pro- gram content than common measures and health impact. GOALS FOR NTAE GRANT PERIOD • Create an online platform for collecting data for the Centers for Disease Control Diabetes Prevention Pro- gram (DPP). • Review common measures for the DPP and create an online data collection instrument that would work for different states and in different counties. • Create an interactive online dashboard showing major program metrics.
LONG-TERM GOAL To improve retention of and career satisfaction among Extension educators, by creating professional development opportunities that build program delivery skills and create strong collegial connections among the educators PROJECT CONTEXT Many Extension professional development sessions focus on leader- ship skills and/or are one-time workshops whose lessons may fade over time. The Cooperative Extension System could benefit from hav- ing more options for educators who prefer to hone their program- ming skills as well as options that give them multiple opportunities to network with and learn from each other, and to apply what they have learned. GOALS FOR NTAE GRANT PERIOD • Pilot a professional development program in the North Central Region that gives Extension educators an opportunity to learn new skills and put them into practice. • Identify the most relevant professional development opportunities for staff development. • Create a network of Extension specialists who provide eight- session workshops. • Recruit Extension educators to be part of the first cohort.
