NTAE 2023-2024 Yearbook

Animation and games are common in classrooms and educational programs—and for good reason. Animation can turn complex, abstract concepts into easily digestible, visually compelling content. In a similar way, games can make learning easier because learners get clear feedback and positive rewards as they explore topics and solve problems, creating positive emotional connections to the game and its lessons.

MEET THEM WHERE THEY ARE Two ed-tech projects hang out in young learners’ spaces and speak their languages

These tools also can increase accessibility and scalability, al- lowing educators to reach a wider audience across geographi- cal barriers and overcome limitations of in-person education, which is particularly challenging in Extension work. In the 2023–2024 cohort of New Technologies in Ag Ex- tension (NTAE) grant recipients, two teams are using these technologies to engage youth and young adults in different but equally critical issues. University of Georgia Extension with KJM Digital is creating a second episode of “Pollinator Superheroes,” an animated series that empowers youth to protect pollinators while teaching them about the Dakota language and culture. University’s Learning Games Lab (NMSU LGL) is devel- oping an online version of its game “Night of the Living Debt,” which empowers youth and young adults to take control of their financial future. (See page 48.) These projects exemplify the power of technology to transform Extension education and outreach, enabling the Cooperative Extension System to reach new and larger audiences. They also are prime examples of how to build sustainable educational programs because not only do they meet youth in digital spaces, where they spend a large portion of their time, they involve learners in the program design itself.

University of Georgia Extension with KJM Digital is creating a second episode of “Pollinator Superheroes,” an animated YouTube series—featuring the character of Nate, the boy in this image—that emphasizes the importance of protecting the critters that keep our food sources thriving.
