Using Animated Pollinator Video to Educate Underserved Populations: “Pollinator Superheroes” Episode 2

A New “Night of the Living Debt Game”: Scaling Access Nationally to Financial Literacy Learning

LONG-TERM GOAL To improve financial literacy among young people

LONG-TERM GOAL To inspire fourth graders in native and non-native communities to protect pollinators while becoming acquainted with the Dakota language and culture PROJECT CONTEXT Pollinators like bees, bats, and butterflies are vital for human health because they transfer pollen among plants, allowing fruits, vegetables, and nuts to grow and reproduce. Educating youth about the importance of pollinators empowers young people to become stewards of pollinators. GOALS FOR NTAE GRANT PERIOD • Create a second episode of “Pollinator Superhe- roes,” using technology advancements—such as Adobe’s Character Animator. This technology allows animations to be delivered in real time through Body Tracker, which makes animations smoother and more fluid. • Provide native seed packets to audiences so that they can plant for pollinators in their communities. • Develop a video viewer guide and assessment tool to gauge the effectiveness of episode two, as well as measure the results of planting the native seed packets.

PROJECT CONTEXT Financial literacy is a crucial life skill, yet many young adults graduate from high school without the knowledge they need to navigate the complexities of personal finance. This can have serious consequences, affecting their ability to secure loans for future goals like buying a car or house as well as their credit score. GOALS FOR NTAE GRANT PERIOD • Develop an expanded version of the “Night of the Living Debt” game for web-enabled devices, including phones. • Update game—including review of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility framework to ensure the game meets standards for inclusive design and character representation and culturally informed learning practices. • Add accessibility features that support users’ visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive needs. • Develop teaching guides to support educators. • Develop a promotion plan that prioritizes rural communities.
