Evaluation Guiding Principles The American Evaluation Association (AEA) developed a set of guiding principles for evaluators. These principles address the ethical and professional standards that evaluators should follow in all aspects of the evaluation process. Extension professionals, whether they describe themselves as an evaluator or not, should adhere to these principles in their work.

The five principles are:

● Systematic inquiry ● Competence ● Integrity ● Respect for people ● Common good and equity

For Extension, our evaluations should adhere to these principles by:

● Being conducted in a thorough, systematic way that takes into account our context and our clientele and the limitations of the evaluation. ● Using evaluation skills and knowledge that will enable the evaluation to be carried out. ● Practicing honesty, communicating clearly, disclosing any conflicts of interest, and operating with transparency. ● Treating people fairly and reducing risks or harm, insuring that people are fully informed about the evaluation work, protecting confidentiality, and appreciating the different experiences and perspectives that people bring to the evaluation. ● Making sure the evaluation advances the common good of Extension, clientele, and the community.
