FREES Fellow: Terry Mesmer, Utah State University
Fellow Report: The FREES partnership continued to work toward the goal of sustainable management of wild horses and burros. The steering committee has met twice and the working groups continued to follow up with Summit participants to learn what aspects of the 2022 Summit were most valuable. This information is being used to shape the 2024 Summit. Team members are also contacting conservation organizations to develop an elevator narrative that will be shared with respective members of Congress to secure funding for 2023 gathers and fertility control projects. Significant Results: ● Consensus on what constitutes sustainable management of wild horse and burros. ● Consensus on the need to integrate gathers with expanded fertility control management in 2023. Experience(s) working with your Catalysts and Key Informants: We have found this process rewarding in that we have received input from individuals who know nothing about the issue. This has provided us with a template to shape our conversations with other uninformed stakeholders. Anticipated Work for Next Reporting Period: (Please list the objectives and goals for the next reporting period.) ● Finalize the elevator speech ● Start planning for the 2024 Summit Please provide any supporting links you would like to include with this report. ● FREES Free Roaming Equids and Ecosystem Sustainability Network ● FREES 2022 Summit Summary Report
