Alabama Master Naturalist and Underserved Communities Fellow: Wesley Anderson, Auburn University Team Work Plan

Fellow Report: During the first quarter, our team accomplished the following: 1. Modified our team by dropping one member and adding another, a Regional Extension Agent with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System in the NW part of the state. 2. Identified Key Informants (Rose, Ashley, and Julie) to help us achieve our desired outcomes with a focus on Evaluation and Digital Publishing and Engagement. 3. Continued work on the online Alabama Master Naturalist course to prepare it for launch in 2023. 4. Conducted 14 field days with the program and collected our first program surveys, which included demographic data to assess underserved groups. 5. Evaluated our preliminary data to start identifying underserved groups. 6. Met with the former Master Naturalist program coordinator to discuss data collected from previous classes. Significant Results: During 9/22-11/22, we conducted 14 field days at Alabama State Parks. We reached 99 unique participants and had many attend more than one field day. We also collected our first demographic data for the program during this time. Even from this small data set it became apparent that one group we need to target to assess barriers to participation are African American communities. Experience(s) working with your Coach, Catalysts and/or Key Informants as applicable: Everyone has been fantastic and incredibly supportive. Both Tira Adelman and Scott Reed have had some fantastic suggestions and have been supportive when we were overstretched to accomplish as much as we wanted during this first quarter. As Key Informants, Rose and Ashley
