A New Ninja Kitchen: Food Safety for Youth Fellow: Matheus Cezarotto, New Mexico State University Team Work Plan

Fellow Report: The NMSU team has been meeting internally. With the support of the catalyst the team established a detailed project timeline and four outcomes: 1. Engage Youth in Understanding Representation in Media 2. Redesign Ninja Kitchen Game 3. Produce New Game 4. Document and Share Processes The project was approved by NMSU IRB. The team has created activities for youth that help them understand representation and tested these activities with youth. In a two-day Game Lab Session the team collected qualitative feedback from 11 middle school students. Feedback includes discussions with youth about accessibility and representation in games, and their critical review of the new version of Ninja Kitchen regarding new theming and gameplay improvements. All feedback was documented and will be used as a data source for publications regarding the project process and final result. Researchers from the team started articulating a journal publication to refine the department framework to design inclusive games, covering accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The team drafted the first version of the project case statement to receive feedback from Hellina Tadesse in our December 2022 meeting. Significant Results: The project is currently in the design phase, where the team articulates goals and objectives for the game. Because this project is a redesign of a successful game, the team is not starting the design phase from scratch, instead is critically reviewing the old game version identifying: accessibility and DEI issues, and things to keep in the game (what is working well) and proposing gameplay improvements to allow more players to identify with the game and be able to have access to it. Formative testing has been done with youth (the intended audience of the game) to get a greater understanding of DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) with regard to Ninja Kitchen. The team also has been engaged in designing and scaffolding activities to support youth in reflecting on DEI and inclusion in games. We have defined 3 articles to publish
