Extension Evaluation Matters: 2nd Edition

End-of-workshop surveys (post-only)

This is an example of a closed-ended, Likert-type question that is often used at the end of a workshop:

After attending this workshop, how likely are you to attend more advanced goat health workshops such as FAMACHA/Integrated Parasite Management and Lambing and Kidding Schools?

Beginning and End-of-Workshops (pre-post surveys)

This is an example of pre-post survey questions that would be administered at the start of the workshop and then after the workshop (two separate measurements):

Before this workshop, please rate your level of knowledge about logic models (pre)

After this workshop, please rate your level of knowledge about logic models (post)

Retrospective (post-then-pre surveys)

For advice on when to use the retrospective post-then-pre design, read: Using the Retrospective Post-then- Pre- Questionnaire Design, a publication produced by University of Wisconsin Extension.

Also, look at the blog post from the American Evaluation Association by Debi Lang and Judy Savageau called, "Starting at the End: Measuring Learning Using Retrospective Pre-Post Evaluations."

Follow-Up Surveys

More advice on creating basic end-of-sessions evaluations is in this tip sheet, Collecting Evaluation Data: End-of-Session Questionnaires, provided by the University of Wisconsin Extension.

Survey Tools

Online survey research software, such as Qualtrics (which many universities license) is a great way to collect follow-up data from workshop participants.

For more information on surveys, see the University of Florida Institute of Agriculture and Food Sciences "Savvy Survey Series."
