Project Demeter

Fellow: Andrew “Drew” Carson, University of the District of Columbia Roadmap

Fellow Report: Key deliverables: ● Urban farming market research interview: Draft completed. ● Food app market research interview: Draft started but not completed. ● Course 1 Soil-Based Systems: Instructor assigned, Draft started, in progress. ● Course 2 Soilless Systems: Instructor assigned but course not started. ● Course 3 Food Safety: Instructor not yet assigned. ● Course 4 Waste Management and Composting: Instructor assigned but not yet started. Course 5 Agribusiness and Marketing: Instructor not yet assigned. Miscellaneous completed: ● Finish Why statement, road-map. ● Launched Trello Kanban board to support project management.Presentation to NUEL southern region meeting. ● Requested internal funding for SMEs to support course development (more a backup in case new hires do not deliver instructors for remaining courses) ● Market research: reviewed urban agriculture online certification course at Purdue Experience(s) working with your Catalysts and Key Informants: Catalysts have been encouraging, have provided resources (e.g. Dawn Mellion provided a start on our high-level curriculum), have challenged us when needed (again, Dawn Mellion on our Why statement, and Dyremple and Fred on the need to focus more). Catalysts may have been too patient with us, but they probably understand our biggest constraint (stang problems at our school) are slow to x. Still, we need to adapt. Team found experience at Impact Collaborative Summit very helpful, especially the negative feedback received from some of those who met with us (especially on need to prove our economic case). We have not taken advantage of support in areas of market research (Aaron) or technology (Molly), but we plan to do so. Anticipated work for the next reporting period (December 1, 2021 - February 28, 2022): ● Complete market research (interviews for urban agriculture and food app). ● Evaluation extending into survey based research in Q3. ● Refine high-level curriculum ● Complete and publish soil-based course ● Begin soilless course
