National Center for Home Food Preservation Fellow: Allisen, University of Georgia Roadmap

Fellow Report: UGA National Center for Home Food Preservation (NCHFP) and the Southern Region Food Safety Consortium led a virtual Food Safety Consortium Meeting on November 30 and December 1, 2021. Allisen Penn, UGAAssociate Dean for Extension and Outreach, Ben Chapman, NCSU Department Head for Agriculture and Human Sciences, and Kimberly Baker, Clemson College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences Food Systems and Safety Program Team Director gave leadership to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of this meeting. The meeting was facilitated by Dr. Rochelle Sapp, UGA Extension Leadership Development Specialist, and Dr. Kristi Farner, UGA Extension Program and Staff Development Specialist. The meeting involved participants from UGA, NCSU, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Fort Valley State University, University of Tennessee, UF/IFAS, University of Kentucky, OSU (OK), University of Arkansas, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Maryland, LSU, NIFA, USDA, and the Extension Foundation The meeting set the stage for determining priorities for the NCHFP and the Southern Region Food Safety Consortium. The public facing page of the NCHFP website was updated for more visual appeal. Dr. Carla Schwan, Assistant Professor and Director of the National Center for Home Food Preservation, started at UGA on January 4, 2022, and will take leadership for the day-to-day operation for the NCFHP and some of the leadership for UGA in the Food Safety Consortium. Dr. Schwan will give leadership to hiring and supervising the NTAE AI Fellow.

Experience(s) working with your Catalysts and Key Informants: The Catalyst for this grant Fred Schlutt met with the Food Safety Consortium executive committee, met individually the chairs, Allisen Penn and Ben Chapman, provided feed-back as appropriate, and supported the development of the project proposal. He is an asset to this project.

Aaron Weibe, Extension Foundations Communications and Engagement Manager, facilitated the virtual environment for the Food Safety Consortium Planning Meeting.

Significant Results: ● As a result of the Food Safety Consortium Meeting, November 30– December 1, 2021, draft goals and objectives were set for the consortium and its functionality within the NCHFP. Sub-committees were established.
