Building a Culture of Composting in Greater Chicagoland Fellow: Kathryn Pereira, University of Illinois Team Work Plan
Fellow Report: 1. We just closed applications to attend the May 12 Compost Summit. Applicants exceeded our expectations. Our goal was to have 75 attendees. We will now host 100 people. On March 10 Pereira sent out acceptance letters and closed the online application; she received 3 more requests to apply. We now have a waiting list of attendees. 2. Our small business food waste audit program application is now live. We should have 5 businesses identified at the end of March. 3. Social media educational posts are beginning to go live and we are building up a stock of posts and other marketing flyers. 4. Pereira, Farley, and Gaspar are all now members of the Illinois Food Scrap and Composting Coalition, joining team members DeLorenzo and Samaras. 5. Our spinoff synergies (composting activities not related to our proposal) are the most exciting things to report this quarter. 6. We will be working with the City of Chicago's 7 new food scrap drop off and composting sites to provide technical assistance and additional training. We will also be testing all the finished compost for quality and safety. Two in-person trainings will be held in April. 7. Pereira has two accepted presentations based on her work with this project for the regional NUEL conference in June 2023 in Madison WI. She has already begun work on 1 of the presentations.
