Q2 Quarterly Reports NTAE Year 4

Intergenerational Digital Support for Maryland Growers Fellow: Vernelle Mitchell-Hawkins, University of Maryland

Fellow Report & Significant Results: We reworked our initial plan and have widened the scope. This means that we collaborated with our colleagues in the Baltimore City Extension office to get ideas that may help to engage urban growers. The conversation led us to a new model that is a partnership with the UMD Agricultural Law Center. The youth will teach in person workshops about technology related to an online presence and the AgLaw Center will support with legal consideration for each new skill. For example, the teens will teach a workshop about email marketing and the AgLaw Center will teach the legal side of email lists: options to opt out, paid endorsements, disclosures, etc. In addition the youth will produce podcasts that highlight growers who already have met with success using technology as a way to share best practices and encourage others. They will also produce FarmerTech minute videos to teach quick (less than 3 minutes) basic tech skills (i.e. wireless printing, email, downloading files, etc.) The workshops, podcasts and video clips will all be produced this summer beginning on July 5 and ending on August 11. To support this work and help with coordination and logistics we also brought on a college intern. Her main task is to make sure they are staying on track with deliverables and timelines. We brought in the intern to help with the time constraint item mentioned in other areas of the report. We are looking forward to this new format. Advertisements are being developed and are expected to go out mid-May.
