Pollution Prevention and Wastewater Phytoremediation Using an Algal Turf Platform for Improving Sustainable Agricultural Practices in Delaware

Fellow: Gulnihal Ozbay, Delaware State University Team Work Plan

Fellow Report: We had chances to discuss our project with various farmers and stakeholders living in coastal communities. This project attracted enough interest that when we get started in May and start monitoring changes and growth of macroalgae at the farm, we will invite local farmers to visit the project site for information and discussion. The following tasks are completed: We identified the method we will use - cost effective method that will cost minimal to the farmers. We also identified the potential water quality issues based on previous monitoring efforts - excess nitrogen species, primarily nitrite and nitrate, dissolved phosphate and turbidity We identified the lab which will collaborate with us in regard to nutrient monitoring at the farm We recruited one graduate and one undergraduate students who will involve in this project starting June 1st Due to seasonality requirement for this project, most of our project activities will be during the summer

Other ways are generally in-person meetings, especially during our general monthly staff meeting.
